How to negotiate a trade properly?

Hello,
My elder got captured and I want it back so I'm offering a double-agent as payment for her release. The other player took the deal but wants me to send the gift first to make sure I don't cancel, obviously the situation is mirrored for me as I have no way to make sure he won't cancel if I do that.

How do you guys deal with this kind of situation? I feel like the game misses a secure trading feature

Yes, there is no secure trading feature. And I think this is intended. This game is about trust and mistrust. There is no way to trade the specialists secure. You have to negotiate a compromise, if you two can't agree then there will be no deal at all.

Okay then, yes I see why it's intended, I can respect that.
So tell me guys, have you already been in such a situation (probably yes)? How did it go for you? Were you betrayed?

Didn't had such a situation myself, but an ally had something like this. He (Player A) negotiated a trade of two of his captured (by Player B) specialist for a couple of drillers. Player A sent the drillers and immediately turned them into a gift. Player B released the specialists. (Not sure how the timing was here). But then Player C captured the outpost Player A's specialist were heading to before they arrived. It later turned out that this was a setup. B and C were allies and it was the plan from the beginning to capture the outpost as soon as Player A turned his drillers into a gift. Player A could have avoided this by scheduling the gift so it turns right before it arrives. This way he could still have canceled the it. He wouldn't have saved his specialists, but at least Player B wouldn't have got his drillers.

Long story short: It depends. Is the player trustful? Does he have any allies that are fighting with you? How good is the deal for him? It depends highly on the situation.

In the end I told him that even if I didn't fill my part of the bargain he would still gain something from it, because I needed the elder to kill another opponent which means more rating points for my business partner. So he took the risk and fulfilled the trade!
