Is it tradition to bully newcomers?

Questions about rules, how things work, etc.

  • I'm playing my first online game as I speak and within 3 days I had 5 of 8 people destroying me. Any ideas?

  • Honestly i have never played a game where experienced player bully i newer one. I personally LOVE to teach newer players how to play subterfuge. I'd suggest just to shrug it off and join a game with a forum regular, everyone around here is really friendly :) (Pm me if needed)

  • Thanks man, it felt like the majority of the experienced players were against me. But if it's like you say, then I've just got bad luck. I'll take your advice next game I play.

  • If you wanna give me names, I could return the favour  haha jk, nojo is right. I would normally try to work with a noob, increase the player base. I hope this doesn't make a lasting impression. This is the most amazing game ever, hope to see you around sometime! And welcome to the forums! :D

  • This is a common problem for two main factors:
    1) newcomers don't realize the POWER of diplomacy. Talking to neighbors early on is key to preventing this from happening.
    2) New comers are often seen as an easy target. It starts as 1-2 people attacking you, but then others see it as an opportunity to grab an extra factory or generator.

Best thing you can do is tough it out, and not give up easily. It gets more difficult to eliminate a player as they centralize drills, specialists, and stack queen hires. You'll learn a lot from this experience.

Like the guys above I try to help newcomers out; a few bits of advice, a peaceful border and friendly chat go a long way.

  • It depends a lot on the newcomer in question and frankly the board state that is present will also have a lot to do with how I open. I think ultimately, I treat newcomers well if they are responsive and I exploit newcomers who are ambivalent or openly hostile to me in game. It seems that some newcomers are happy to talk, others don't really conceptualize what it means to have alliances and work to mutual benefit. I don't make backstabbing a practice, but I've never back stabbed or betrayed an alliance with a first game player. I've also ruthlessly ground out first game players though.

I try to make the game welcoming to new players and offer game-play advice when it helps them. I try to make neutrality agreements with new players to ensure that they have one front they don't have to worry about when the game begins. Once I get ignored or rebuked, I try to dismantle new players as efficiently as possible and force a resign so I don't have contested space to worry about when things get hot and heavy.
