Cheating

Questions about rules, how things work, etc.

  • What do I do if I suspect some of the other players in my game of actually being the same person? This is based on:

    - some players not building mines
    - always logging on at the same times
    - but never simultaneously
    - joined at the same date
    - played the same number of games

  • That's some next level detective work, I don't know that I would have ever noticed most of that. Seems convincing though. I would tell all the other players what you suspect and gang up on them. Maybe a group chat that excludes the 2 players you suspect.

There's been discussion about an anonymous mode that could be developed post launch. I wonder if it could use random placement when creating games. That would, in theory, make it difficult to wolf-pack together with other people I know.

  • we're not sure how to deal with this kind of thing yet, so in the mean time, email us about it (contact at subterfuge-game) and we'll figure it out on a case by case basis.

  • I haven't noticed anything concrete in this regard but I've heard rumors.

Though it wouldn't be a catch all, maybe some IP tracking?

What ever you decide, make sure to not announce what you're tracking or how. We don't want cheaters just getting better at it. Bring down the ban hammer with no explanation. that would be better.

  • IP tracking wouldn't account for 2 different players in the same house.

  • One possibility is to link the accounts via Facebook and/or Google+. I know it's not always the most popular thing and it won't solve the problem 100% but it is rarer for people to have multiple Facebook and Google+ accounts.

  • I think it would be too hard to police on an official level. As the game's user base grows, the requests to go in to check out cheating accounts would increase and support for handling the requests doesn't seem sustainable.

Best way I think is to use the personal notes and maybe note some odd behaviors in games. Then future games you'll see the notes and can maybe warn others or follow their behavior closely again for another note. Soon, with enough notes and warning in communications to others, it should discourage them when they find out it's too hard to win.

  • Mammux, I totally suspected him too. In addition to the evidence you listed, One account was constantly gifting all of their drillers and specialists to the other in a previous game. And they both continually made a lot of the same strange and poor strategic moves;
-Sending attacks from very far away even though there were obvious waypoints in the middle.
-Sending fresh production continually at outposts with a combat specialist that destroyed them without loss.
-Sending specialists (infiltrators, assassins) on subs with few or no drillers to attack outpost.
-Sending immeadiately gifted subs to each other to outposts they hadn't yet captured or were close to losing

  • Disclosures and information is the key.

For a start, If you have played with one person in a game, in the next game it should to all players if there are players who have played together in previous games.

As for fake accounts or newbie accounts, that will try to bypass game history...Subterfuge should let ALL players in the game know if people are playing from the same IP or device.
I don't care if you are triplet brothers playing along with your dad, mom and pet donkey in a game of 8.. Go ahead. If they work together or work against each other, that's upto the 6 of them... but atleast the remaining 2 players know that the relationship the other 6 share.

Finally, if someone is gifted more than x% or x number of subs, then it should be made public after the game is over.. and if they are the winning players, a mod should look if there was any pre-game team partnership and ban the accounts.

  • I don't know if I'm just old, or if in the new age of video games cheating has suddenly drastically increased, but I'm under the assumption that cheating in online video games is dramatically overestimated.

Exploits may be encountered more often, but are a relatively nonissue I think.
