Bad Manners

Just shooting the breeze

  • So, I am in the process of playing my first two games. I played and completed all the tactical puzzles and decided to play two games at once. One was "beginners" and another wasn't ranked but had a mixture of new players and players with a few games (less than 20) under their belts.

Now, I don't mind that we newbs were the first targets. But what I was surprised was the meanness of the experienced players. Even those I was allied with were "bored with explaining things to you" and mocked every play I made. Those against me taunted me constantly.

Sure, I don't know how to play... but everyone has to play their first game.

Was I supposed to have spent 20 hours reading the various specialist combos and ruses even before I started?

I don't want to appear soft skinned, but how common is this? Does Subterfuge attract people with poor gamesmanship, and an interest only in belittling players that are less experienced than them?

I haven't found this with other online games I've played (eg travian)

  • I might have touched on this in another posts, but you ask a good question. I personally, and a most people here on the forums are not like that. I just recently joined a game labels "Beginer" with the sole intention of teaching players. (I could care less about the fact that I'm likely to win)

Any place you go online you are bound to find rude people, it's just may seem more common here because the player base is small and games last a long time so the Ill mannered players leave a lasting impression

I do not come come across the types of people you are describing very often. (1-3 every 5 games). When I do find people like this, they are very likely to be mean to others players in that same game in addition to you. I try to rally support to attack the rude player. I find most people are willing to attack a rude player.

If this becomes a recurring problem for you, feel free to PM me and I'll play a game with you and try to help you out ;)

  • Hey Fez. Welcome to Subterfuge! I am sorry you have had some negative experiences in your first few games. I had a similar problem in my first game; two of the players were quite obnoxious, before and after I was eliminated.

I am still fairly new, but after that first game I have only encountered one other player that I considered "toxic," and I'm now 12 games in. In my opinion, 3 players out of the 100 or so I have played with is a very low percentage (especially considering that I also play League of Legends, where I swear the toxicity rate is 30% or more). Most players are nice, and very good sports, especially considering how frustrating and disappointing this game can be!

Also, I agree with Nojo completely. In the games I have been in, each of those rude players was aligned against eventually.

I will say this - it is unfortunate that the Devs didn't install a mute option. That said, Fez, I am certain you won't want one often. Good luck and have fun. And remember, diplomacy > drillers.

  • I guess I'll throw my two cents in as well. I might be wary of rooms labeled "for beginners" or the such, as often I have run into more aggressive players looking for an easy win. Its kind of an empowerment thing. You may even want to start your own game, where you can control who comes in and who doesn't.

You can kick people who have unreasonable amount of games under their belt or have toxic medals.
This is the wild land of the internet and there are bound to be a couple assholes out there, but I assure you that most players are pretty cool.

I feel like you're being prejudiced to me....

However, I agree with all of you. This game has a few bad players, but many good ones. Like pretty much everyone has said, don't let your first game dictate how you see subterfuge. Its an amazing game, a couple game experiences and you'll see why. And, like Nojo said, if you run into them again just PM a friend or forum regular to come join you. We'd be happy to help you have a better experience :D
