So I'm Calabrese (from the southern province of Calabria). Sicily is the island off Southern Italy (considered the soccer ball that the boot is kicking ~ symbolizing how we never wanted them in the first pla- nvm that's a personal rivalry thing...). Anyways, those from Sicily are called:
Sicilians. These are the people who originated the Mafia (Calabrese did it better but...). These are the people who got invaded by France twice, Morocco, Spain, and other north African countries. They couldn't take the hint that mainland Italy wasn't helping but whatever.
So, the saying "never bet against a Sicilian when death is on the line" is in regards to their horrid history, their Mafia affiliation, and their crookedness (Sicilians are considered the cons, I was taught "never look a Sicilian in the eye, always watch where his hands are going. You never know if they'll end up with your wallet!")
