My Text Adventure Game

Just shooting the breeze

  • The very first thing I should do is put a link to the wonderful website that allowed me to do this. If you enjoy my text adventure and want to make one yourself or play other people's adventures for FREE click:

For those of you who don't know, a text adventure was a popular style of computer video game back in the good old days when technology was dumb and people were smart.

This is the first text-adventure game I have ever made, and I'm pretty proud of it. It isn't overly long (Aclonicy said he beat it in like 15 minutes) and it is still has a few bugs. Here's a link to it:
    http://play.textadventures.co.uk/Play.aspx?id=editor/9d91ceee-98d2-416c-9c2f-c80fcd0d91c3/Thief%27s%20Journey.aslx
I also hid a bunch of random easter eggs into the game, for whoever is insane enough to figure them out.
Please, feel free to write criticisms, compliments, bugs, and whatever else you find while playing it. I plan to make more of these because I find them rather fun, and feedback would be awesome.

Also, I highly suggest this site to anyone else who is interested in something like this. Personally, as someone who has dreamed of the ability to create their own video games, I think this is a great way of stepping your feet into the water.

    CURRENLTY KNOWN GAME ALTERING BUGS:

    1) In the room with the mouse and the mousetrap, the hyperlinks tend to not work.

This is easily solved by doing any action, by either interacting with something in your inventory or just typing something in the command bar. After one turn the objects should work again
To enter debug mode, type the name of the best Subterfuge player
      2) When you the beat the game, the beginning dialogue plays again.

I currently have no solution for this. Whatever is causing this is beyond my knowledge

      Easter Eggs:

      1) (Almost) Every object has hidden interactions that can only really be seen when you type it out in the command box. Try punching/kicking, licking/eating, or destroying any object that comes your way.
      2) Typing the name of the best specialist will reveal a fun hidden message

    • This looks so awesome. I started to play it, but had to give up halfway in to go and eat some food. I'll beat it sometime ;)

I actually started to make a text based adventure similar to yours, using a website called Twine. It was pretty good, but I have limited creativity and couldn't make a good storyline. Yours looks great though! :D

    • Is it subterfuge themed? Because that would be awesome. If it's not I'll make one.

It has a slight Subterfuge theme throughout it all, but since this is my first adventure I wasn't able to add in as much Subterfuge as I would have liked. Subterfuge only really is in the setting and Easter Egged in object descriptions.

    • The mini quiz near the start was a nice touch. I got a bit stuck on the second question though.

I just checked out Twine, and I admit it is pretty awesome! However, I would classify it as a "choose your own adventure" rather than a text adventure. My website tries to also have both a Text adventure and a CYOA format, but the CYOA isn't all that good. It's text adventure is amazing (but takes a bit of time to learn, just like anything else). Twine is definitely much better for CYOA, especially with the visual aid of building each box separately.
I'll spare a you from a mini rant of the differences in a Text Adventure and a CYOA for today

Thanks, the mini quiz might honestly be my favorite part of the adventure. It took a bit of time getting all of that computer worked out and which questions to ask.

    • Also, the entire adventure is still open, meaning I can easily edit it if you guys see anything that needs a small edit. It will edit to the same link so as soon as something is edited you guys will be able to play the newest version.

The quiz was a nice touch, as with Math the second question took me two tries to figure out. I actually had to open Subterfuge to find out the combat priorities for the final question. Overall just an amazing Text Based game.

If you want to, a second one would be great, its evident you spent a lot of time on this so no rush. I may try my hand at one..
