The Fascist Opening (a subterfuge opening strategy)

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I have found unlimited success with an opening strategy that is pretty much applicable to every game I have encountered. Of course, the strategy should be modified according to games and that it is entirely dependent on the other people in your game.

Step 1: The first thing you really need is to grab as many alliances with your neighbors as you can. These imply SEPARATE ALLIANCES. That means that most of the alliances you make should be separate and mutually exclusive from the other ones you make. This is important because you will need to break some of these later in the strategy.

Step 2: Now that you have made these important alliances on as much of your border as you can, you need to negotiate takeovers. This means that you let you allies know what factories and power plants you are planning to take over. This lets you conquer all of the territory and start out with a driller surplus. This also works to weed out the unholy alliances. In this, the people that intend to back-stab you almost always send drillers to places they agreed to let you conquer.

Step 3: This is where the strategy really defines itself and is by far the most important stage of the opening. You need to create a scapegoat. Choose one of your previous allies that have betrayed you, someone that refused to ally with you, or just pick a weak ally, and make a ploy to the alliances you are in for all out war against this person. This does several important things. One, it unites as much of the players in the game for one cause with you as the leader. Secondly, since you chose a player as the scapegoat who shares a common boarder with you then you get a majority of the spoils. Lastly, it makes a psychological aura with your success that your allies will be much less likely to betray you, because you make a sorrowful example of the scapegoat.

Yes, I call this the fascist opening because of the reliance on uniting sometimes separate allies on one common cause, which in this case is an unlucky player.

So know that I have given you my best strategy, go out and make use of it! Hope to see ya'll in-game. Feel free to post thoughts!

  • Sounds similar to what I do, but in reverse. If ever I find myself in second, it is incredibly easy to persuade people to unite against first place.

  • Thanks for sharing your strategy! If you can keep up being the leader until the end, that's certainly a strong position to be in. But like Road said, anyone who wants a shot at first plays will probably work together with others to take over your leading spot in the endgame. Congrats if you manage to keep that first place until the end!

Actually, it looks exactly like the Axis strategy in Europe to me. Pick on the little guys until you're a huge threat. Then the rest of the world gangs up on you and you die. :D
Jkjk, it is a legit strategy
