battery life killing this game

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I saw the update topic maybe I missed the important feature: battery life

The whole purpose of this game is to be mobile and allow us to fit moves in between other obligations but this is ruined by the battery eating nature of the code.

Right now it destroys my battery, and I am torn between playing it when I can but always running around looking for cables to plug into, and deleting it. It clearly eats a lot of battery just idling (why?) and eats more just looking at the map (why?)

For a game that has spent a long time in gestation I don't understand how this issue got past QC and is apparently not yet addressed.

IMO it is dramatically reducing the pool of new players the last thing most people want is an app that is the top of the battery usage list.. (iOS, iPhone 6)

    Thanks

  • You...... May have some subterfuge addiction problems. I play this app... Quite often. And I even question weighed I play it too much. But I never have battery problems. Maybe you should provide more details about your setup, iPhone? Android? What version? How much time do you spend on the app? How often do you use your phone with subterfuge in the background? Do you use the new "low power mode" that was included in the update?

  • I play one game at a time is that an addiction?

Typically the iOS battery tell-tale says subterfuge is 50% to 75% of the battery in any period, with safari being 15-30% and everything else single digits. By time, 90% of the screen time in a day is safari - subterfuge maybe an hour? It's one game on the go. You and I probably spend a similar time in minutes putting in moves.

Low power mode is for the last 10% of a battery but makes no difference in saving the phone from subterfuge

I could kill the app after opening it and checking it, but that should not be necessary. It undoubtably eats a lot of juice while running and more than it should when in the background even though it should not use anything if not displayed, and when the clock is not being wound back and forth.

I have dabbled with hundreds of games, none that chewed up the battery like this when not in use, and only a few chewed it up like this when played but they tended to be 60fps 3D type titles, or had battery bugs that got fixed with an upgrade.

  • You can put Subterfuge in battery saver mode. Maybe you already knew that, but I'll sum it up just in case.

There's a little gear in the top left of the home screen that takes you to the settings. Battery saver mode basically lowers the fps from 60 to 30. It does work quite well.

  • He meant subterfuge low-power mode. They added it in the first update, it reduces the frame rate (which kinda makes me laugh for a game that moves so slowly). I can't tell a difference in the game, it brought my battery usage down to about 35% for an hour and a half of game time. That's similar to other games.

On the subterfuge home screen, tap the gear icon in the upper right corner.

  • I don't think that is the root cause although it may save some consumption for time of use.

First point: when you are looking at the screen and nothing is happening except for some minor spinning base animations, 60fps full frame 60fps animation is a bit ridiculous, yes? How about its 10fps unless you actually touch the screen?

Second problem: it's how my battery vanishes when the game is in background but not killed that is most of the problem .. In that case why would Fps be a factor?

This game is doing something wrong when it isn't the active task...

  • The background one is something I'm not seeing. I show an hour and a half of in game time and 2 min of background time. Not sure what's going on there.

  • In a week I have 4.3 hours of subterfuge and 6mins in the background. Some things you could try to improve battery life:

-Run the app in low power mode. Lower fps in the game means less updates means less battery use
    - do you show your battery % in the top right? If yes, turn it off. Showing the battery % actually makes the battery drain much faster.
    - do you multi-task out of everything at least once per day? Consider opening multi-task and exiting everything you're not using (including subterfuge). You will get notifications from subterfuge even if it is not running in the background
    - Do you use low power on the iPhone settings? Try considering it? I've never used it so don't know much about it
    - Do you use location services? (So will google maps find your location and stuff like that?) turn this off and only allow it for apps that require it. This eats battery like crazy. Once I turned this off on my phone it started lasting longer than a full day.
    - Do you use auto-brightness? Do you have your brightness all the way up? You should never have your brightness over 25% of the way up. Dimmer screen = less battery. Turn auto-brightness off, if you really need to swipe up from the bottom and change it yourself.
