Why are you playing Subterfuge?

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I'm rather new to Subterfuge and I really love the tactics involved.
But what do YOU like most about Subterfuge?

  • I like a strategy game that keeps me involved. Subterfuge does. For me, it's the perfect mix. It's not some online browser game where you spend months building a character, those don't appeal to me.

People in my 'offline life' aren't into these strategy games that much, so I need a game with a community where I can find my coplayers. I've been looking at the boardgame "Diplomacy" but it takes a full day to play, and at least ~6 players to be fun I believe. That's not really an option fo me.

Subterfuge games take long enough to make me invest in the game and in allies, but short enough to not get into a bad mood if someone betrays me. I can spend 5 minutes on it during lunchtime, and also 60 minutes in the evening trying to come up with strategies for the coming day or two.

For me, the balance in everything just works.

  • as Stefan said I love that it gets me involved. I am a very competitive person and this game does it for me. I like to cooperate with ppl but at the same time I like to bring myself to a position from where i can take out another player. This game is the perfect mix. Takes long enough to have me engaged, works well if you check every 5 mins or every few hours. I paid for the full version so I can play 2-3 games at a time.

  • The mix of commitment works both ways though: the person spending more time will naturally make better moves.

  • I have always had a special place in my heart for board and card games. One of my favorites is the lord of the rings the card game from ffg. I feel many video game are to short and shallow. In games like call of duty there is almost no penalty if you do badly. You just respawn. I also feel this game requires skill. You can stack specialists and send around subs to defeat your opponent over many days. Wrong moves can cost you. This is one video game I found very enjoyable. I almost don't consider it a video game. It's a board game on a computer. I also want to compliment the community. I find many gaming groups are very rude, competitive, power hungry, etc. I have not experienced that with this group so I want to say thank you to everyone who makes this game amazing.

  • I love this game for its high stakes and tension. something about the slow pace and social aspects of the game make me feel very invested in the outcome of the game, so when moves pay off for me i get a rush of excitement. If i'm worried about something bad happening to me in game i get incredibly anxious. It gets my heart pumping in a way few other games do.

  • I find that the social aspect is incredibly interesting. You could play without talking to anyone but it makes it so much easier for people to attack you if you haven't said "hi, how are you, let's be friends". Human nature I guess, but it's fascinating. Also, no speaky = paranoid neighbours

It's also unique (to me anyway), that as it plays so slowly, it almost torturous if you've made a mistake as it'll take hours for it to play out. Similarly, if you feel you are doomed, it's painful for it to happen slowly (hence the resignations).

    I am hooked though!

  • I would like to add to what's been said that Subterfuge made me discover that there are people from my species around here. Since my Diplomacy game days, I have great difficulty trying to get people around a table for hours and hours. With Sub, I have found a like-minded community sharing the same obsession for long haul tactical/strategical games.

  • Two reasons I am finding this week+ long game completely addicting (which is saying a lot for a 29 year old guy with ADHD).

    1) The diplomacy factor in this game is huge. You don't get to see who else is talking to each other like you do in a face-to-face game, so it adds that element of hesitation on who to trust, who to keep close, and who to downright backstab. Working out plans to wipe out a player with your allies, and seeing that plan come to fruition is addicting, and I bought Level 2 access just to start more games before my first one was finished...

    2) The strategy in this game is huge. From where to send drillers to what specialists do I build and in what order. Nothing is greater than seeing an enemy sub 12 hours out, and heading to your mine to take it over, but you thwart them with a last minute smuggler sub with enough drillers to thwart the attack. Then sending a quick message to the enemy apologizing for their misfortune.

I thought the slow play, even though real-time, would bore me to tears, but I find myself checking the game 3-5 times a day and more as the game progresses, just to update my alliances, and make sure my moves are still correct.
