I've seen this style of faction games before, but I believe the cons outweigh the pros:
PRO: Since the faction is so large, if a few people leave, there is no big impact while in a small clan, a person leaving can have a bigger effect on their rating.
PRO: Less hostilities between players of different factions, because they are so large and general
PRO: No hassle of choosing what clan is best for you
CON: No sense of "family" - clans were people who chose to come together because of their playstyle, friendliness, or shared characteristics. Being in a larger faction doesn't give you that feel.
CON: Lack of individuality - chances are, in a big faction people will soon realize that there are a few talkative players dominating the discussion. In a smaller clan, if a player feels uncomfortable with another player, he can just choose to leave or join another clan.
CON: If you are invited by a friend or another player, you can't join their faction as it's random. Thus, there would be no recruitment, a big thing in games with clans is looking out for potentially good players).
