Bowing Out

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know I'm taking an extended (probably permanent) break from Subterfuge. I've deleted the app.

Don't get me wrong, I really love this game. For the most part. I've come to my decision because of a combination of things:

    1. I didn't like how active I needed to be throughout the day (and maybe into the night!!) in order to stay competitive. Neither did my wife or kids.
    2. Ultimately I don't think this game fits my personality. All too often I end up being the instigator of everything, which at times has worked well for me but at other times not at all. I'm the one diving in whereas other players aren't as fast to join in, or don't commit, or bow out, and then suddenly I'm in a 1v1, or else bore the brunt of the damage, and the more passive players are rewarded for this behavior.
    3. Domination mode is awful. Seriously, really bad. We never did do a post dedicated to this topic. Oh well.
    4. I hate how you can totally wreck a player but then they can survive through turtling, building up specialists, repelling virtually any and all attacks, causing trouble, affecting things.

Anyway, some of these things have been brooding under the surface for some time now, and the other day it all bubbled to the top. I was (still am?) in an anonymous game with the absolute worst map I had ever seen before. All factories, almost no generators anywhere. Miserable game. Fine, whatever, we're all in the same boat, adjust your strategy, fine. Anyway, I got in a war with another player and realized that I had to make some important decisions in the middle of the night when I'd rather be sleeping.... and.... all this stuff kinda came crashing down on me, I decided I wasn't going to wake up in the middle of the night for this little war, and suddenly I didn't care too much about this game any more.

Mostly I'm posting this to let you guys know because I'm signed up for some tournaments. Sorry to bow out in the middle of TW2000's tournament, especially right when zannalb and freonsk voted to give me first place in our last game. Thanks for that, guys, and sorry to let you down. Also, topkilla's tournament and the valentine's tournament -- I won't be playing.

Ron, Noel, if you read this, I'd be really interested in future ventures that you are involved in. This game was very well thought out and put together. As others have said, this was one of the very few games that I've played with any regularity or lasting interest. I wish you all, forum goers, best of luck, and I appreciate the conversations and collaborations that we had together.

    Peace.

  • 6, I'm red in this game you are talking anout. You are brown right? I hear you man tough map and less than stellar help. I'm doing really well in the game and it is mostly because you and I worked together as allies.

It is the first time that I knowingly played in a game with you and now that I know it's you, let me say that I really enjoyed working with you. I know how frustrated you got but still you pressed on.

From what I see from the forums the community is losing a great member. Cheers to you and enjoy sleeping through the night again!

P.S. I am stealing all your outposts now. ;)

  • Please do. Sorry I didn't gift, I just don't have it in me to log back on.

I was considering trying to eliminate either sky or teal with my sub but they had to hire in certain ways and I also had to be awake in middle of the night to be able to optimally repel navy's attack on me.

PS Teal if you're reading this

You're a pussy. Grow some balls and do something.

  • 6payh,

Thanks for the few games we had together, you were a good ally and loyal till the end. I feel and share your pain and all the points you have made are right on the money. I myself have reduced my participation in subterfuge, used have 15+ going on at once, now down to 2-3, just because people got to settled into the backstabbing and teaming up. It is frustrating and I just stopped trying to be competitive, I just play for the fun of it.

    All the best in life.

  • Ill say the same thing that I said when Ucross quit: just play casual games, play for fun, see what shananigens you can pull on noobs. Dont let winning be the determiner of whether you have a good time, and thats easier if you take rating out of the equation.

  • What Kevlar said.

I don't play ANY ranked games. They're wayyy too competitive for my liking and they make me feel like not playing anymore. Thus I only play casual games and little fun things like the 'cold war' or 'experiment games' because they turn the game into something you haven't experienced yet. If you don't want to get up in the middle of the night to check on an attack then don't?? I never do and I do just fine, I've never needed to be up at 3 am and if I did, I either let them take my outpost or held off my attack. It's not worth wasting precious sleep time on this game.

T'will be sad to see you go 6payh :( hope to see you in some casual games in the future (Like roadkeihl!)

  • I restrict myself to schedule subs only 8 to 12 hours ahead. Otherwise I would spend 3x of the time on this game. Most of the planning after 12h can be done later, too. Very often old plans have to be changed anyway because I get new information.

  • I've been playing picross and Crashlands since being eliminated from the last forum regulars game. Sometimes I check the amount of players and active games, or the open games list but that's all. There's something cool about the intensity of this game, until you need a change of pace, at which time that's fine as well.

I hear what you say about personality. The plotting and calculating is a very fun challenge, but after some time spent in war mode, you wanna go back to spending your nights and getting up in the morning with your loved ones.

Take care, and know that there's a stranger out there with very fond memories of the path we walked in the first forum regulars game.

  • I'll miss you 6, had a lot of fun in the games we played. You gave me my first medal. Good luck out there.
