I'm actually a bit lost, haha. Are you referring to what I talked about in the forum regulars video? Because I was talking about how I thought Crisismana was asking me to play, not a specific specialist.

  • I think you should probably put hypnotist on the list. Although its not a definite choice for me, I would get it if I couldn't get the smuggler. It probably won't be on many people's 1st hire, but it will probably be on the next hires and so on...

  • I was surprised not to see pirate on the list. That's often my go-to first hire.

A very interesting choice, but why?

A very interesting choice, but why?

It fits my playstyle. It lets me dictate which outposts my opponent can reinforce or attack, and it sets me up nicely for a lot of nasty combos.
It's also fairly nasty by itself in the early game, and I think most people underestimate it. I've plunked more than a few queens in the first few days using just a pirate and my wits.
Anyways, I think it's impossible to conquer someone alone without an edge of some kind, and the pirate does do that quite nicely.
I will say, though, that given the choice between a smuggler and a pirate, I'd have a hard time picking. In that case, I'd look at whatever my next hires are.

  • Agreed, I really like the Pirate as well. He is incredibly fun as far as specialists go!

    *puts on poll-nazi hat* :p

Now, now, now. The poll asks "Whats your favorite first hire?" The poll does not ask "What would be the best single hire at the start of the game, if you ignored the context of the entire game?"

Its impossible to assess the value of a hire without taking into account its potential promotions.

I chose Navigator. Navigator wouldnt even have a place on the poll if wernt for its potential for future hires (both combos with other specs, and potential promotion to Admiral).

I almost chose Tinkerer because of how generator starved my games seem to always be (is it just me?).

I would put Smuggler 3rd, unless by some miracle there were few factories and lots of gens. Move speed is great, but Id rather wait 22 hours for 2x local AND +50% global, than have 3x local (only to friendly outposts) in 4 hours. There's also no point in promoting to Tycoon if you are locked down by drill cap, which is frequently the case early in the game (unless you see Tinkerer as next hire. Then you go Smug, Tink, Tycoon, then Master of Energy once cap is reach, then auto win).

  • I would have put pirate on the list, but the poll was limited to ten options. So I picked ones Ive seen hire the most.
