server gang ups

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • Ahoi,

the public chat idea is not bad. I was being ganged up (is this the self-help group?) even though I was the 5th of 10 players to join.

Previously, I always was one of the last persons, so it came to my mind that people are making alliances even before. So private chat should definitely not be allowed until the 4h window before the game starts.

Generally, I am in favor of trying to keep things a little bit more balanced in order to have a good game. I remember as kids we played Risk like the strongest 2 of 4 players always making an alliance killing the other 2 and then sharing the victory. This was weird and definitely no fun ;-) Maybe the scoring system is a problem here when people are fine with their 4th place if they get a positive score.

  • I wouldn't mind if points were given for actions rather than final score :). I been just attacking random people without regard of playing it safe to preserve my rating. It is like Monopoly for me and its more interesting to just keep fighting.

While it's totally unfair, I think players have a right to do it.

I agree with you. If everyone decides to attack you, there's normally a reason. You hit one person, all their allies attack you. That's why diplomacy is such an important thing. Makes it so people won't attack you.
Also, I really don't think an entire server will gang up on one person. Just very difficult to do. That person almost always has an ally or two that won't attack them. It's normally just 2-3 people attacking one. Hive mentality works well though :D

    What is "fair"?

Everyone has access to the same chat tools, has the same power to persuade other people, has the same number of starting outposts and drills, etc, etc.

To me that's fair. If someone can't (or doesn't even try) to win over other people to join their side in an upcoming/current war, then they got beat in a predictable and proper way. Neglecting/failing in diplomacy and getting ganked by multiple players is no more unfair than someone who neglects/fails to move their drills in an effective way to win a physical battle.

(note: I do think there are places in which the game is unfair. as discussed elsewhere, its not fair that the first people to join a server get significantly more time to form diplomacy than the last to join. My point is that getting ganged up on, in itself, is not unfair.)
