Economics/pricing of this game

  • You would spend it here because of the exact reason you mentioned, quality over quantity. The developers have created a very in depth tactical strategy game here. That's why you'd want to spend the $10 here over anywhere else.

  • If they charged upfront for the game you might be right, somewhere in the $2-$5 range might work.

But since it's freemium, not a mass market game, and only a small percentage of your player base will ever pay any money, $10 strikes me as more than fair.

I don't see anything wrong with playing the free version indefinitely though. It's the full game, you're mainly missing out on the convenience of being able to schedule 2 days ahead of time.

  • I love this game, and I'd like to support the developers by buying it BUT... the price is the sticking point.

    US $10
    AUD $14.99!!!
    EURO €9.19 approx

This price takes the app out of the "Impulse Buy" Category and into an "investment" Category. Investment items cause customers to think twice, and that can reduced sales.
Especially AUD$15 takes it out of the psychological "under ten dollars".

Another approach is keep the retail as is but have a promotional discount. Discounting a high RRP gives the perception of value-for-money on a quality product.

The quality of the product is not the issue. Fun factor is not the issue. The price is. With a multiplayer game, you need PEOPLE playing. And if people aren't paying, the L2 clearance games will be stagnant with the same people playing it.

I post these thoughts because i WANT this game to succeed, and the developers to do well. But obviously not everyone is going to agree with me.

  • i love champinoman's naming idea. i would pay 20$ for the ability to rename any empty outpost i captured. i guess people could use it to grief by naming them obscenities, names that are hard to distinguish, or just long random mashings

  • I am guessing L2 is not going to be the top level and they may rework pricing when L3-L99 are ready...

  • I bought L2 because I wanted to support the devs. I, as well, am a no-job full time student (job over summer) but I will still throw money at the developers.

    Make it rain.

Nonetheless, I did like how outwitters seperated their IAP's; for example one payment for "get unlimited games" one payment for "unlimited time machine commands" one payment for "XXX" or had the option for a discounted payment for a bundle of everything. That way they attracted all crowds who were interested at the same time. Those who just wanted to play for friends would buy unlimited games, those who were more about competitive play would get unlimited time machine moves, etc. It would be cool to see different artwork/themes you can flaunt to other players. I would throw money at that in a heartbeat!

I'm a student too, and when the game launched, I literally had $3 in my bank account, haha. Had to eagerly await my next paycheck to buy the full version. That being said, I would spend $50 on this game.

  • I think some of the ideas in the blog post are good ones. Basically, we need more ways to support the devs.
