God Help me I don't know how to shorten it.

People around me seem to think I have a sexy reading voice, would you like me to record an excerpt and put it on vocaroo or something?

That would be fantastic! Would you please?

Series 2 would be a specialist series. Each specialist gets its own short video:

    Briefly describe the specialist
    Give some quick offensive uses
    Give some quick defensive uses
Briefly explain some good combos of hires that the specialist works with.

Roger that, Would you mind if I pick your brain a bit? How, for instance would you take away the unnecessary clutter from my above Martyr Quide? Its bit awkward for me to introduce a combo without telling how to use it well.
Also, footage could play a great deal into shortening the video by showing how to use a combo.

I see what you mean and you raise a very good point. I do intend to post said video's on Youtube as a series. At the moment I'm not trying to tackle subterfuges popularity and accessibility (though I'm sure some video's could help with that a bit) but rather its ability to keep new players.

Subterfuge did receive a large boost of popularity (in installs anyway) for a short time due to the positive reviews it received by critics. But it didn't keep a lot of them- And that's the problem i'm trying to address.

I definitely agree with you. There are problems on both ends, and I don't expect you or anyone else to be the sole solution to those problems.

I am glad that you are thinking in the right direction, and hopefully it will make a difference! I'm up for anything that will help this game live long and prosper.

The Martyr is a dangerous specialist to use for both the enemy and the owner.
The Martyr can be used as a Deterrent, a Queen Seeker, or a Death sub destroyer.
Because the Martyr blows up in any instance of combat either at an outpost or otherwise, it is vital to prevent early detonation, as this can result in a wasted hire or at its worst, damage your own subs and outposts.

  • *shiver* sorry but this bothers me. It's "de-ter-ent" 3 syllables like that.
My faith has found a resting place,
    Not in device or creed;
    I trust the ever-living One,
His wounds for me shall plead.
    I need no other argument,
    I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.

    I've heard it both ways.
    "Ded-urrent" or "Di-turrent"

  • I think this is a fantastic idea. The one question I want to ask is are you going over mechanics, strategies, or both?

Mechanics relate more to how the game functions. Some examples of mechanics would be: an explanation for how the game moves in 'ticks', how maps are generated, how the game picks what specialist are available for hire, and specialist combat order (especially for global effects in battles with engineers, generals, and kings for which one activates 'first'). My only thought about this is that most of this information already exists between the forums and wiki, but it would be nice to have it all in one clear and concise area.

Strategies would go more into advance tips and tricks for playing the game. This would include specialist combos, and other stuff that I can't really think of right now. But yeah, tips and tricks should basically sum it up. Sorry this isn't as long as the mechanics section but hopefully someone who understands this better than I do can fill in more suggestions.

The reason I bring this up is because I believe it is important to have a healthy balance of both. There are players who want to dig deep into the mechanics of Subterfuge and there are players who want to learn how to improve their Subterfuge game through learning new strategies. We should be careful not to solely focus on only one type because both parts are very important.

Overall, I really love this idea and would love to help in any way I can.

    Sure, I'll do it
But... Deep, sexy voice? If you say so...
I feel as if I have a lot to say about Saboteurs (so underrated), so I can do them if you like.

  • Well, time for counter arguments. See page 1 for the first part of me asking questions. (Once again. I love the idea. But we need a questioner here.)

    1) ok. So 45 secs for the infiltrator. That ones gonna be the shortest. Try explaining the uses of a hypno/king in under 45 secs. At your numbers, the video will be a good 20 mins just explaining specs. Personally, I don't wanna watch that.

    2) not much to say here. Just make sure you pick the best stuff.

    3) when I learned how to play, it was through the puzzles. It took me 2 months before I got to the forums, and probably about that long to look into the wiki too. I'm not sure I've ever even looked at the links in the front page of the game. What's to say that new players would do that? Why should they think to look there?

    4) the only long videos I watch are because they're funny, or because they're a movie. Can we make this a movie? No. Can we make it funny? That would be a stretch. It'll be hard to capture interest in it. Seeing as new players may not even like the game when they start, would they invest a full 20 mins watching? The most likely ones who would are the ones who really want to stay, and do a lot of background research, thereby making the video unnecessary

    5) where do we get our footage? Try and compile it from a multitude of games? Do we know how to do that?

P.S. Those are actually 3 different links!

Break it up. If we're watching 20 one-minute videos instead of 1 twenty minute video, we can stay engaged however long we want, or find exactly what we're looking for quickly. Just make a playlist of a bunch of crash-course videos for each specialist/mechanic.
