Tutorial Video's- A Community Driven Guide for Noobs

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • In my view this is a great idea, but some of the concepts mentioned won't be very practical. For example, for each specialist, we should just answer some FAQ about it or something. Trying to present some deep tactical or otherwise complex or rare manoeuvres won't be of much help to the viewers. What I'm thinking is that very commonly seen combos like the queen hunting combo be featured in a separate series to the specs, perhaps under the topic 'spec combos'. Individual events might just be used to illustrate how the spec would work in a certain situation, or to just back up the audio commentary.
If we are going to include complex specialist interactions and other strategies and tips, I think we need to include them somewhere else, and not with the specialists. They are two different parts of the subterfuge learning process after all (that is, of learning the rules, and developing strategy)

I think we already did this.

oh yeah, in your thing. Well then lets just introduce each spec? I mean, what else can we do? Put a link to the document? lol

Series 2 would be a specialist series. Each specialist gets its own short video:

    Briefly describe the specialist
    Give some quick offensive uses
    Give some quick defensive uses
Briefly explain some good combos of hires that the specialist works with.

Roger that, Would you mind if I pick your brain a bit? How, for instance would you take away the unnecessary clutter from my above Martyr Quide? Its bit awkward for me to introduce a combo without telling how to use it well.
Also, footage could play a great deal into shortening the video by showing how to use a combo.

    Lol@Topkilljoy

It looks fine. - Just remove clasificstions that don't need to be classified. Like "the martyr is a defensive specialist". And it would probably be best to give a very quick overview of the combos. And save the more in depth version for a separate video

    4) the only long videos I watch are because they're funny, or because they're a movie. Can we make this a movie? No. Can we make it funny? That would be a stretch. It'll be hard to capture interest in it. Seeing as new players may not even like the game when they start, would they invest a full 20 mins watching? The most likely ones who would are the ones who really want to stay, and do a lot of background research, thereby making the video unnecessary

    5) where do we get our footage? Try and compile it from a multitude of games? Do we know how to do that?

This is a valid point. How do we want the videos to look? We can't show gameplay for all of the video because that would get old fast. I was kind of thinking we could go a different route. I was thinking we could do a more slideshow-ish style. It's hard to describe it exactly, but maybe in a similar style to Game Theory or Extra Credits youtube videos (Do you guys know what those are? It's hard in such a diverse group of Subterfuge to pick out perfect examples that I can assume people have watched). Both of those are more on the educational spectrum but are still interesting and engaging. So if we adopted this style of showing interesting pictures that have to do what we are talking about and only using gameplay for when it is needed we could maybe make it more interesting to watch.

  • Zyxe on the topic of what- Mecahnics, Strategy, or both

Overall I think we should focus on the specialist Strategy, but we can totally have a bit about the pure cheese of some of the combo's, like the interaction between pirates and gifts and how to be an asshole with the navigator when it gets targeted by a pirate

In talking about one, we will probably touch up on the other.

Roady- a new voice for the Saboteurs

I'd love to have you. I'm fairly familiar with the sabotuer combos. I'd like to cooperate on a script bit for it. I think we have enough footage between us to see a few uses of this specialist

    Math as the Riddler

1- [legnth of video vs complexity of specialist]
as said before I would like to keep the video's down to around 5 minutes. Specialists that require little explaining- The intelligence officer, the infiltrator, the minister of Energy, etc (we may need to role out a way to make them entertaining) may be grouped up into a three specialists per video, with each section check marked on where they begin. Somebody mentioned maybe a single video going well indepth on the use of a combo or playstyle (General combo's, Setting up a good king build, using the Queen hunter, Co-op Combos, countering combo's)

3- [more on how to lead people to these guides]
Generally,(i'm speaking for myself here) if a game pics my interest I generally look up game play. I'm thinking of Posting the video's on YouTube for this purpose (SubterTube, sound like a cool name?)
I suppose its not about force feeding information, but rather making it very very availabe- we can coordinate with Ron and Noel on getting it to the actual front page of the game.

    4- [ Making it interesting]
I'm thinking of adding some slapstick into some of the video's.

    5- [Footage]
I-Phones come with a built in record button, androids can use the Youtube App. I'm thinking of collecting said footage either via email, drop box, or any multitude of ways.
We have some noob that has 100 something games under his belt- he might be able to hook us up...
I'm thinking of adding directions on how to capture it. Overall we want the showing off of the specialist to be slow so it doens't outpace the dialog- can be sped up or slown down for viewing purposes.
    Zyxe on video style

That actially is a very good idea- a almost powerpoint. Screenshots would indeed be way easier to edit- bullet points could easily be added- maybe a motion video at the end?
-here is a video type reference- Etxtracredit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os3lWIuGsXE
Due to amount of how much he is talking maybe our video's are going to be a lot shorter? Will probably be just something we'll find out.

    Suggestions on editing software?

I found a good audio editor, but it doesn't have video. I believe Aclonicy said something about a good editor from when he made the no spec recap?

And continuing onto my arguments... (I kinda hate this now. I feel like I'm the bad guy here. Anyway, needs to be done.)

1)[length] now using this new model aims for around... 20-25 videos? Each 5 mins, explaining anywhere from 1 spec in detail to 3 or 4 as a quick gloss over. Is this kinda not what the wiki is already? Explanation of each spec? Or are you planning on going into much more detail on ways to use it? (Ex. General & Diplo, Pi/nav/ass)

    3) [accessibility for noobs] getting Ron/Noel to put links right into the game would be helpful. Still, you want to make sure it's very accessible to the noobs

    4) [humour?] you don't want to go overboard. I've watched YouTube vids that you can tell they're trying to be funny, and failing. Miserably. Makes the video useless. Don't fall into that trap.

    5) [footage] yeah, you can record. Just have a team of people who have played a lot and used these combos to scroll through their games looking for good parts to record out? And if so, how would that be done? Say we get silver/roady to talk, but I used a good combo in one of my games. How could I get the footage to them, and be able to fully overlap their voices? If they'd want to slow down and focus on one time, but I move on too quickly? It would take a lot of collaboration to get it right

  • One thing you are going to have to deal with is the amount of different ways specialist can be used. Is there a way that community members can send you video from the games they play. Then you can compile the best ones in a tutorial video that shows more variety for how players can use the specialists.

So one week you can post in the forums that you are looking for short video clips that demonstrate how to use a martyr. Then other players summit short videos (with no voice over) that could be used in the tutorial video.

Then you edit the clips together, form a script, and have someone narrate.

This would help you have a variety of things to show since you will be drawing content from many different users.
