Balance Update Ideas. Ron and Noel want your opinion.

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • gardengnome wrote:I like janitor's suggestions except I think there should only be one King at most, like only one queen at most. The first king already has a significant drawback with the loss of shields which balances the king's offense well. That is not the problem, the subsequent Kings are the problem and I don't think 50 driller penalties are the solution.

As for the pirate, it should be able to catch any sub, even navigators (unless the sub makes it to a port). I think the pirate moving faster and faster every hour is the solution.

Hmm- Like I said previously, in my opinion Kings should be allowed to stack- like all promoteale specialists. I think its an awesome aspect of the game to be able to stack global abilities. No shields and a 50 less drillers per king should push the odds into a non king holders favor a bit more.

As for the Pirate- He should be able to be countered by fast specialists- the helmsman and smuggler and Local effect Admiral. If we make him too fast then Queen Killers (Navigator, Martyr/Assassin, Pirate) Will become impossible to avoid.

  • The problem with the King is stacking. 1 King is pretty irrelevant. 2 Kings starts to become a problem, and anything above that is annoying.

So with the -50 supply per King, and 3 Kings, you're at a loss of 150 supply. Which massively removes the threat of kings until the late game. Because if you pick up 3 kings in the first week or so, your supply cap is likely to be so incredibly low that the 3 kings will be irrelevant.

The idea isn't to make the king irrelevant, but to bring him in line with other specialist options. Right now, not only is he a massively strong force, but there's is 0 reason not to get kings. Especially if you already have one.

    Debate02- The Princess-
    - Like Topkilla I agree that stacking Vision can be very powerful- http://forums.subterfuge-game.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2037&start=10 (at the bottom of the page)- Instead of stacking multiple princesses in the middle of the map, I think strategically placing them at the edges of your territory to maximize their value should be encouraged.
Consider this a nerf to the Sentry- Personally I think a Sentry Princess Stack is frustrating and annoying to difficult to deal with- a single sentry princess combo has a decent enough range in my opinion (covers around 6-7 outposts) (I can write a book on how to deal with them, don't feel the need to enlighten me)
I chose not to nerf the Intelligence Officer because I feel he is underused?

When you choose a vision spec you are giving up the option to hire something else that can be used in combat. That within itself is enough to balance the vision specialists out.

    Yes and no.

Yes, the vision specs are absolutely 'fair' in the idea that they cost a hire.

No. They really are not balanced. At least, when they are stacked. See, vision/fog of war is an extremely important aspect of the game. - It directly relates to diplomacy. - Even with a single Intel Officer hire, which doesn't sound like much, you get a massive boost to your vision. - Allowing you to see roughly 2, maybe 3 bases into your neighbors. As opposed to the 1, maybe 2 bases of standard sonar. That effect removes all immediate risk of initiating an attack.

And that's just 1 Intel Officer. - It only takes a few more after that to effectively be able to see the whole map.

Either way, stacking vision specs takes away from the spirit of the game. Much like stacking Admirals does.

I would love to see vision stacking either eliminated completely by making the bump only effect standard sonar range.
    OR
Put the standard sonar range nerf on the princess only, and make the Intel officer a promotable spec of the sentry.

I just made these little pictures to help explain:

    No Intel Officer:

    Intel Officer:

The Intel Officer is insanely powerful as is. He basically allows you to see an entire extra row of outposts, which massively changes ones plans of attack.

I also understand that everyone is pretty much saying two things here... "Specialists should be allowed to stack" and "Specialists shouldn't stack". I just want to clear that up and say that I believe Speed and Vision Specialists shouldn't be able to stack.* and other specialists should be able too.

  • I suppose my reluctance to nerf the intellegence officer comes from his near uselessness when it comes to hiring two.
Allowing his ability stack would set him apart from the Princess and give him a reason to hire more than one- similar to the infiltrator nerf.

If he does not stack- if you hire one, then you will have a dead useless hire when another pops up.

His ability to reveal the nature of hidden ouspots cannot be stacked or enhanced, so taking vision stacking away would make him a dead specialist.

So we have a few options-
Allow stacking- make him unique from the princess in this manner.

Give him a simple buff, but remove the stacking vision-
A small speed buff, I guess? I don't know. Like i said, we need to keep it simple so that this update actually makes it.

  • is this "update" even happening? as far as we know it's just the developers agreeing that some balancing issues are present and maybe trying to get nojo to stop emailing them. They haven't said anything concrete to my knowledge

  • They sound sincere. I believe they like this community even if the game wasn't a financial success.

They sound sincere enough, but I have not had a response email in maybe 3 days. Noel said they had been planning a balance update, and they already knew the king had some issues before I notified them. Maybe they hope to keep the date of the update a surprise. Or maybe it's just around the corner so they don't think it's neccasary to notify us, but I don't know.

  • I'm thinking of emailing the above proposed changed to him directly, as this thread may be difficult for them to decipher what we really want in the game. objections?
