  • Here's the link, if you haven't seen it yet. It's even more fantastic than the first three.

At the end, I was like... "wait, what?" when Matt survived. Clearly, they were kinda confused too.

    1) Quinns throws his specialists at Matt.

    2) The specialists take out Matt's drillers, but are also captured by Matt.

    3) When Matt gifts his queen, the first thing it encounters is his own sub with the captured specialists.

    4) The queen hops on that sub and heads back to safety.

So, I just tried sending two of my own subs at each other, and gifting one of them. They pass by each other without any change. So why was Matt able to gift himself his own Queen?

  • Best I can figure is that the hostage sub with the captured specialists isn't considered under your control. So it triggered the gift.

If that's the case, is that a bug?

  • Also, depending on when this game started it may not represent the latest updates.

I get the feeling that his own sub triggered the gift and thus forced his Queen back to his closest outpost. I imagine that this incident was reported when it happened (a few weeks ago) and we are possibly now running newer versions that have eliminated it out of the game.

That'd be my guess. Or maybe it just bugged out.

  • I think this is how it happened:

Quinn's specialists, after combat, get turned into hostages heading back to Matt's territory. When losing a specialist, they stay on a sub that is controlled by the enemy, (i.e. The lost specialists would be in a sub controlled by Quinn heading to be captive at Matt's outpost.) when the gifted queen comes in combat with the first sub if Quinn's, it moves the gift to re-target the closets outpost of Matt's and turns the sub into a normal sub (not a gift) and captures Quinn's specialist onto the sub. The second specialist is not on the Queen's sub when it returns back but is rather still on a sub owned by Quinn and is right underneath Matt's queen the whole trip back.

  • That doesn't match what the game displays, though. When your specialists are captured by the enemy, the game shows an *enemy* zero-driller sub heading back to the *enemy* outpost, with your specialist captive inside it.

Thus when Quinn's specialists were captured by Matt, they should have sent back to Matt's outpost on zero-driller subs owned by Matt. There is no reason why a zero-driller sub owned by Matt should be able to accept a gift from Matt, and so this is a bug.

  • lackofcheese is probably correct in thinking this is a bug. Here is the order of events in what I think is happening:
Matt's 46 drillers enters combat with Quinn's specialist.
Combat takes 10 minutes before the results are shown.
During those 10 minutes Matt's Queen moves and enters into combat with Quinn's specialist, even though it is still in combat.
Matt's 46 drillers win, he is left with 36 drillers and Quinn's specialist is captured.
Matt's Queen finishes combat and is rerouted to the other sub's owner's closest outpost, but the other sub's owner is now Matt.
It switched mid-combat and so Matt gifted his own Queen to himself.

I have seen something like this before. Where subs 10 minutes behind another sub also enter in combat when they shouldn't. For example, someone on this forum had a Martyr just behind their driller sub and the opponent sent 1 driller and detonated the Martyr that should have been safe behind it. Here is a link to the post he made about it: http://forums.subterfuge-game.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=976

  • That seems like a solid explanation of what happened, especially if you have evidence of the same thing happening in other contexts.

In this case we're talking about the Queen being gifted rather than entering combat, but if we assume that gifting works just like combat, then your explanation does work. In other words, the game decided that the Queen was about to encounter an enemy sub, and thus triggered the gifting process. However, when that encounter actually happened, it ended up being gifted back to Matt himself.

  • So is the consensus that it was a bug/unintended behavior? It's obviously a pretty extreme edge case, so not a big deal, but I was curious.
