This is just an idea, but I was thinking of hosting a 1v1 tournament. I would need to see how many people would be interested before starting it though. It would be a single knockout, regular bracket game. Seeding would be random, and winner moves on to the next round. L1s could join, although the length of it would force them to only play this for a month or two. Please tell me what you think and if you might be interested in joining.

Tempting, I have done a couple of 1v1's and they're interesting,
but I think there are variables in a 1v1 that make it less fair than other formats.
If the other player gets the random edge on opening outposts + gets a better specialist selection, it can be pretty tough.
Still, could try it, recognizing there are some luck factors.

I think the main thing is that maps and specialists are random.
If maps were symmetrical and the speicalists were the same then 1v1's would be fair. Otherwise, in a high level of gameplay, a slight advantage in the beginning almost always leads to a win.

I've done a couple 1v1's and 1v1v1's. They generally just turn into elimination races. Because of the smaller map, A princess and a queen hunter is normally very powerful. You could implement some rule changes to mitigate this maybe.

What changes would you suggest?

I don't really know. Maybe not allowing direct combat for 24 hours would help? Or banning certain specialists. I think it's just something that's going to happen though, with only one opponent, it's normally easier and faster to kill them than it is to mine your way to success.

For the first day you can only take dormant outposts. And each player gets exactly 5, which must be negotiated between the players. Each player must have exactly the same number of generators and factories. After 24 hours, you may start attacking the other player.
If you do this, it ensures both players start out more equal, although they will both have 2 specialists/1 promoted specialist.
Then you can make the starting situation more fair. Although the situation later on in the game will largely be determined by specialist luck.

I'm currently in a 1v1 game and I'm doing terribly simply because I had to go to bed and he was able to take all the outposts once I left. I think that's a very good idea, and I don't really think there is a way to change the luck of specialist hires

I don't think there should be rules
If you want a 1v1 tournament then just go for it, accepting it for what it is
Just my $0.02

I dont think this is a good idea. As you make game smaller diplomacy (a huge part of the game)is completely removed and it becomes a game of luck. The player closest to dormant outposts and with good early specialist hires will win in a landslide...taking a couple extra outposts early snowball and there will be no way for the losing player to recover bc there's no diplomacy.
I was in the 2v2 tourney and this felt too small. The games weren't that great because there was no diplomacy involved..teams were predetermined. In the final game one of my opponents had 2 kings within the first 4 specialists draws. His ally had pretty good hires too, think he got a tycoon early. I'm had bad hires and there was no way my team could overcome those early hires. Magnify this for a 1v1 game.
