Recently on the forums there has been a lot of negativity revolving around certain game mechanics. However I wanted to start a thread were we talk about the thing the devs did right wich far outweighs the negatives. So I ask the question, what is you favorite thing about subterfuge? My favorite thing about subterfuge is its board game feel to it. I have always loved tabletop game and I play several but there was never really a video game that had the appeal of deck building and stratagy that had caught my interest. With subterfuge I finally feel a game has done this well. the combination of drillers, specialists, and outposts all come together to make a game that can have in depth stratagy that can vary from game to game, much like board games. The specialists are all unique and the diplomacy all ties it together and gives I'd depth even board games cannot match. With most other apps trying to push amazing graphics or complex mechanics subterfuge kept it simple. Why do you like subterfuge?

I love the high intensity. The trouble you have sleeping for fear of being attacked overnight, or the suspense of whether or not you'll win the war or battle. I love the high intensity spots, even if I'm losing it's exciting. Plus you can always come out of a tough spot with diplomacy. Then, there is the awesome payoff when things do go your way, and its exciting and motivates me to keep playing.

That we have a community with dedicated fans, who can (mostly) in a civilized manner criticize a few game mechanics. We love the core game and want to bring up stuff that we discover by playing the game, by diving in deep and finding strong combo's, etc.
Also, the short friendships you build with strangers over the course of a few days. No names, no faces, just collaboration, and even in those few days you sometimes sacrifice your position to help your ally get ahead, or someone helps you in such a way.

The uniqueness of it all. With games like Clash of Clans or Game of War, you end up doing the same thing over and over: make defense, go into an attack that the layout may change but the mechanics don't. Subterfuge is so much different in the fact that your games are never the same. One reason is that you're playing with real people. You (normally) don't know anything about these people, so you have to figure it out on the fly. With every game bringing something new and exciting, it's the biggest reason why I love subterfuge.

I am consistently amazed that in a game that takes days if not weeks, it nealy always comes down to decisions and moves made on the order of minutes.
That and the people. I have yet to find a complete jerk and even though I'm sure they are out there I think not taking the whole thing too seriously, and winning and losing with grace (both battles and wars) goes a long way to having better relations.

The unknown. I love how the fog of war limits your vision. Should I attack that undefended factory, or is there a smuggler just out of range? If I launch at his Queen, does he realize he can take out my sub by comboing his General and Pirate, or will think all is lost? Will they be asleep long enough tonight that my sub will trip their martyr before they notice? It's exciting not knowing exactly how things will go down, and I'm always ready for someone to pull a trick move that I never predicted.

I love it when that happens. Of course, it's never fun when you have the win all lined up and they stop you. But to see a brilliantly designed manoeuvre and defense, you can't help but be amazed. I'm in a game right now, two people (one of them being me) are attacking one person, we though we had the win but he blew us away with a strategy I never expected. I couldn't help but feeling a sense of awe at the perfection of it.

Could you explain it to me, or better yet send some pics? I love those.

Not my favourite, but a cool little feature that changes the whole game and that I'm sure no one was gonna talk about: spherical world. It's not flat, it's round. You can circumnavigate everywhere. This actually is a really great design decision, it takes away "I'm in the middle, I'm screwed" situations or "I'm at the edge, there's less expansion opportunities". An unspoken about decision that balances the game so, so much.

That little limited information time wheel...
It tempts you
It lies to you
It's your best friend
Running scenarios, making changes, scheduling orders when otherwise occupied... it makes the game playable, enjoyable and entertaining even when you need to wait hours to see what really will happen.
