How do you deal with egos?

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I'm in a game right now with a top 10 player as a neighbor. We tried to reach an agreement about our border/truce but it couldn't be compromised. After I didn't agree to his terms, he said that he was a top 10 player with a "reputation" and he has "friends at the top". He said he's going to make my decision to attack him a "stupid decision in the long run."

How do I deal with someone who threatens me by his reputation and how do I deal with someone's ego?

This game is not anonymous, so the player in referencing may be reading this - but all the better.

  • Simple: Squish them in the short term. That way, when they try to ruin your long term game, you can always be like, "Yeah but I crushed you."

  • Will you gift me some drillers to help make that happen?

  • Ok, alternate idea: Mercilessly mock them.
Never mind, don't do that. That's mean.
Seriously, though, the best option is to ignore the ego. They're being ridiculous and you only validate it by listening.

  • Rating counts for precious little in any individual game. Just form an alliance against them....

  • Enjoy the fact that you got under the skin of a supposed top 10 player :). Kind of sad that a top 10 player would use the I got friends to bully people.

  • Yeah, top players generally dont respect that kind of bullying. Diplomacize with the players around him, tell them what he said, and crush him just like you would a 1200 in their first game.

In my guide I call this guy "the asshole". He fits that definition perfectly. Use him as a tool to rally people to your side.

Agreed. I generally sympathize with the players who want to encourage a friendly player base. For a top 10 player to use your reputation and blackmail people 'below' you, is just being afraid that this player with a lower ranking, can hurt you. And in the meantime he's making the game less fun for other players.

Try to have a good time anyway. Maybe other people in your game will have the same experience with this player. It might be possible to form an alliance against this neighbour.

And one thing about how to deal with the ego - you're friendly (and probably right) not to name this player here. You're saving his reputation even though he's threatening yours. His ego is his problem. You could always mention this topic and that you may or may not have mentioned his name over here. And then imagine him quickly opening the browser with quickened heart rate to log on to the forums and check... ;)

  • Thanks for the advice guys.

We are at war and I think I have surprised him with some interesting tricks. Me and him haven't spoken and I can tell he's getting a bit frustrated.
