Suggestion: Achievement medals

a while ago pandasecret suggested achievements. At the time this would probably not be possible to implement except on some long forgotten forum thread but with the newest update adding in medals I beleve that panda's idea may be more implementable. If you complete the achievement you get the medal. Simple enough. Here was pandas original thread. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1268&hilit=Achievements. Your thoughts?

Well I guess whether or not they're a good idea depends on what the achievements are. There shouldn't be too many of them and they should be relatively hard to achieve. I'm thinking maybe something like 'win 3 consecutive 10-player games'

Thanks chariot rider! My thought was to make 3 tiers of achievements. First tier would be fairly easy to achieve by playing your first few games (and make the player feel better), 2nd tier would be moderate ones, and 3rd tier would be ones which you have to actively strive for.
Achievement spread would be roughly equal, with perhaps more 3rd tier ones as people complete more achievements and want to get really difficult ones. (For example 'assassinate 5 Queens with a single assassin in a 10 player game' would be a 3rd tier one.
Winning 3 consecutive 10 player games would be a 2nd tier I imagine.

Wait, you do realise that if the chances of an excellent player winning a 10-player game is, say, 1 in 2, that player would have to play, on average, about 10 or 11 10-player games to achieve that. And I highly doubt many people's chances of winning a 10-player game is 1 in 2, especially with diplomacy at play.

For example 'assassinate 5 Queens with a single assassin in a 10 player game' would be a 3rd tier one.

That is almost impossible. If 5 queens are assassinated, what is the possibility of 1 assassin assassinating all of them? Well since I'd expect at least 3 players to hire assassins, the chance of 1 assassin assassinating all of them would be about 5^4 (because there's a 1 in 5 chance that each queen is killed by the same assassin as the one that killed the last queen (assuming that the player that killed the first queen isn't going to use his other assassin to kill any of the remaining queens), and a 1 in 1 chance for the first queen to be assassinated (assuming that 5 queens were assassinated), so 1 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 5^4) and so the possibility is roughly equal to 1 in 625. And that's assuming that 5 queens even are assassinated, of which there is roughly a 1 in 3 chance per 10 player game. Basically, if you play 200 10-player games, you have a decent chance of getting this medal. Good luck :)

Just get your ally to hire and bargain his way to 5 princesses. Your ally then lets you assassinate his queen along with the four other princesses that become queens. His final princess keeps him in the game and you become one of the few people on the planet able to get that medal. Use multiple allies for highest effectiveness.

Congratulations, you have spent countless hours trying to rig a system in order to get a pointless virtual medal. But at least it is a shiny medal (probably).

Well, that's why they're tier 3. You have to go out of your way to complete them - for example the 5 Queen Assassin would most likely be completed in a domination game, where you have control of most of the map, and have a nav/pir/assassin with a diplomat or heavy combat sub ready to liberate your assassin.
(your goal would be to push enemies onto generators, keep them surpressed, then kill their queen when your combo is ready).
And winning 2 10 player games in a row is feasible - "winning" means getting one of the top 3 medals, and even I have done that before.

Wait a minute... 'winning' does NOT mean getting a medal. Winning means getting first place. I am actually extremely mind-blown at how you came to this conclusion. Like....seriously??? The first few synonyms for 'win' on Google are : ' come first in, finish first in, be victorious in, triumph in, take first prize in'.... its a wonder how you came up with the idea that being 3rd could be a 'win'. Coming 3rd means you came 3rd and since you were beaten by 2nd and 1st place you cannot have 'won'.

Oh, and also I said 3... not 2

If you're going to work together to achieve one of the achievements, that practically defeats the purpose... You might as well be multiboxing in a 2 player match and waiting for 5 queens and assassins...

Oh, AND I forgot to mention that if we're going to count princesses as being 'queens' then you have to kill them in the right order.
