Moral Dilemma. Opinions Please

1. 10 player neptunium game. I made a three-way pre-game alliance with sky and purple.

2. We agree to fight brown. Brown is aligned with pink.

3. Sky makes a mine within 15 hours.

4. I fight pink and brown nearly alone for two days as sky now has too little drillers to help fight. I do not know what purple is doing. I rely now on a new friend, beige. He gifts me many drillers to help fight pink. Without him I would have lost.

5. Sky now has built up more forces and provides funding to me purple and beige, as well as orange and olive on the other side of the map. Purple and sky finally launch on brown. I do not have much left. Brown gifts EVERYTHING he has to pink. Sky and purple swoop in to clean up what little brown has left. I continue to fend of pink. Beige continues to help me.

6. Sky and purple finally come to my rescue and help fight pink. Pink dies. The game is almost over. If I stay peaceful with everyone who I was aligned with (sky purple and beige), I take 4ths place. I decide not to attack any of them and I'm content with 4th. Sky will take first. Purple second and beige third.

7. I review how I came to fourth place. I attribute beige to a lot more of my success than purple and sky. I do something controversial. I voluntarily let beige take one of my mines. It was my idea, not beige's. I will still place fourth. But beige will now place first.

8. Sky is livid with me. He says I betrayed our original alliance and I am a backstabber. I can no longer be trusted. I tell him that his early mine hurt me and was selfish of him. My argument is that I put reliability, helpfulness and selflessness above any pre-game alliance that was made. He lets it be known that I can never be trusted again.

Who is right?

What you did is fine

Sky got out-diplomacy'd

It's called karma

Making a mine 15 hours into the game when you've made a pact to start a war on a player is like giving you all the middle finger. So yeah, karma.

Well played.

Unless it was agreeded that sky would mine early to help fund you both, he really didn't help your alliance. Sounds like he's upset at losing the gold medal.

From what you've described, you've played the better game diplomatically.

Hopefully beige shows his gratitude by buying you a medal. :)

I was not made known that Sky would build a mine. He did it without telling anyone.

When the funding came, it did help. But it's my feeling that the mine was built with selfish intentions.

It was my idea to allow beige to take my mine, more of a payback from all the help I got from him during the game, not with the expectation for a medal. I'm actually expecting a backstabber medal from Sky. It wouldn't be out of character.

This was an epic game. I think I'll make a video of it!

I see nothing wrong with what you did bangerz. I wouldn't even hold it against you if you turned on sky and tried to place 3rd or even 2nd. Especially if everyone else in the game had been eliminated. I generally expect to be betrayed when there is no one left for me and my ally to fight together.

In the last 24 hours of a game, I attacked an ally who had done absolutely nothing to help me. Before any of my attacks landed, I gifted them so he could try and take 3rd place (even though he didn't have a chance). He gave me a backstabber medal AFTER I gifted the subs!

I've gotten 3 backstabber medals and only semi-deserved one of them. I'm starting to view my backstabber medals as prized possessions of grand victory!

You mentioned Sky funding 5 people. I'd guess he was keeping friendly with lots of players, so he could gain a Neptunium advantage and be hard to catch up with. I wonder if he was trying to have maybe one or two other alliances besides the one with purple and you. If he's funding 5 people, and there's also himself, then there are only 4 players left. Brown and pink being obvious opponents for you, but maybe not so much for him. You just know he's not funding them, he might have been keeping friendly until it's really easy to pick up some cheap outposts.

There are alliances you agree on diplomatically, and alliances you form naturally and through working together. The latter are the best, but you don't know upfront if it will work out that way. So I generally don't make alliances in the first 24h, you don't know what you're getting into. Early game I just look for openings on working together with someone to achieve a goal. If that goes well, an alliance is a logical upgrade for that cooperation.

Sounds to me (by only hearing your side of the story of course) that Sky was all too happy that you kept two other people busy while he was setting up his win in peace.
