On the Subject of Medals

I know that they're a income source for the developers (at least I think I read that you buy them) and that's good...

But as an Android User, am I the only one who honestly is not looking forward to Medals being introduced to our platform?

I read the threads on these forums and a constant factor seems to be poor sports and sore losers awarding negative medals that aren't at all deserved (like giving someone a backstabber medal after you backstabbed them and they managed to destroy you for it)

The whole idea just really concerns me as a new player to Subterfuge (currently only on me third game.)

I'm worried that medals have the capacity to really ruin my gaming experience with Subterfuge, like the negative opinions of other players can have entirely unwarranted consequences on future gameplay just because I did well and they aren't happy about it.

To give an example, my very first game I made my alliances and I never broke any of them. I never attacked anyone except this one guy that I targetted at the start of the game and then ended up eliminating before the end. I got 2nd place due to my tactics and diplomacy, but considering the guy wouldn't even speak to me the one time I messaged him, I could totally see him awarding me a negative medal after the game was over simply because I chose him as my target and didn't let up. The idea of being labeled a backstabber by him for it, when we never had an alliance, does not sit well with me.

TL;DR: I keep reading about the experiences you iOS users are having with medals, and it really just fills me with dread about the idea of that feature coming to the Android platform.

at first I didn't like them.

It was nice getting a trustworthy ally medal. And it was frustrating getting a backstabber medal (especially when you didn't deserve it)

But now that I have a few good medals and 3 backstabber medals (i don't believe I deserved any imo), I've come to the opinion that they are dumb. In the higher ranked games people don't take them seriously. When I see them in other ppl's profiles, I don't take them seriously. I just ignore them.

If someone buys me a medal (good or bad), cool I guess. it supports the devs. That's it.

I believe when they introduce the medals to android they will be changing the name of the negative medals to "you made me angry". And honestly, I dont feel people even take a second glance at the negative medals on someone's account anymore. Since so many are given for the wrong reasons or just out of spite.

I've never personally experienced someone treating me differently because I had a medal. I currently have a backstabber medal and an honourable foe medal. No one has ever used my medals to rally support against me as far as I know. Also, the devs are renaming the negative medals to something less detrimental. I believe "you made me mad" is a possible solution, which looks much better than a giant turd.

As far as I know, you can already give negative medals to people on Android. You just can't give them from Android yet.

A depressingly interesting result of the negative medal system, is that it creates a Mutually Assured Destruction scenario (MAD, if youve seen Dr. Strangelove, or know much about the Cold War). Basically, if you give a negative medal to someone, you run a high risk of that person giving YOU a negative medal (or multiples) in response.

Basically: Instead of the devs just removing nukes from iOS users, they are downgrading them to dirty bombs, and ensuring everyone has access to them so they have a weapon in the MAD scenario.

I had someone try to leverage distrust against me based on my medals just yesterday. And it hasnt been the first time.

I'm in this one game where I used the fact that someone else had a backstabber to diplomacy myself a very good start, making allies, bonds and building my empire early. And this is bad. From the start, the person I blackmailed and used, the one with the backstabber had a disadvantage. This is permanent. Even in casual games, medalled can't enjoy the full experience. Backstabber medals make it so much harder to make ties! In my opinion, it's not right. A player shouldn't have to play anonymous or give up his record and make a new account because someone didn't understand the consequences of their actions.
