In my haste to join a game that a friend was starting I misspelled my username. Upon searching the forums I read that it can't be changed. After this game ends would I be able to re register as a new user with it spelled correctly, but still using my same email address?

You are correct in that you can't change it. However, I believe you can take the email off of your current account (using the user control panel in the forums) and set up a new account with your new name. Just make sure nobody has taken that name before...
