What do the bots do?

This question has been stuck to my mind for quite some time, and I really want to learn the purpose. And yes, I am talking about the "online" bots like Google Bot, Yahoo Bot, Machu-12 Bot etc., which are written in light purple under "Registered Users".

I believe (someone may have said it earlier) that they are looking through the forums to out onto their database. So if you were to take a section from a topic/thread and google search it, Google would be able to take you straight to that thread. I may be really wrong, but that's my thoughts

They are usually associated with search engines, looking at pages to see what is "interesting". That information would then be used to create links on the search engine's query pages, making web search more relevant to the Search engine's own users.
These are actively encouraged by web developers/designers who want their sites found.
I wouldn't (usually) care to show the bots to show in active user lists, but, the developers here either want them to show, or were not worried enough to hide them.
