I don't know why I made this post but I want to talk to everyone about the shape of your empire in subterfuge. I like mine to be a circular as possible because it has the lowest surface area to volume ratio meaning you are less vulnerable. I also avoid concave shapes.

Vaguely round shapes do tend to be the best. However, I also like having long borders next to players that I trust. So my empire tends to go around/grow with my ally's.

My empire tends to grow in an organic way based upon game developments and diplomacy. I like an empire that allows me to connect sonar top to bottom or left to right, but generally I'll grow into the territory of my enemy rather than plot symmetrical development.

Same here. Mines just flows with the game.

I enjoy it when I see the whole map. Especially late game. And I'm losing outposts. But I have 1 left. And 5 princesses. And a sentry. Yeah. I love that. Just turtling. With 300 drills. And sitting there. Always fun.

The best shape is a long stick so you can whack people with it but home is where ever your queen is. If you don't like your starting position, take someone elses

.

Depends if you got trustworthy allies, if you are alone or dont trust the people i like circular borders with factories on the outside with gens on the inside.
If i have 2 loyal allies i love to have us all back to back to back that way you theoretically only have to worry about 2 sides of your borders as the other ones are touching your allies and you can siphon the drillers from there to your exposed borders.
But overall i don't know if the shape of my border matter as much as the locations of generators vs factories as well as their relation to the factories and gens of your opponents. easier to defend a factory than a generator.

I like a big ole rectangle- long enough to that I can ship a smuggler from one side to the other though enemy territory. The smuggler will be flipping off the outposts he passes as he brings a surplus of 50 drillers to a vulnerable border.

The shape (circle, square, rectangle, Heptagon, etc) itself isn't a problem if its clustered together. The location of generators vs factories obviously effects the shape.
One shape that makes a great early target are horse-shoes: a U or V shape with a big gap. Players starting like this tend to be at a disadvantage to early rushes.
