So while I bored I decided to take a stroll through the forgotten announcement board. The very first thread in it was about build 144. Here are the notes:

v 144 (2014-05-15)

  • No more Illusionists.
  • Taking over a city sets that player's outpost as neutral (and destroys all drillers).
  • Outposts back to having 0 Np by default.
  • Implemented private games
  • Registration for remote notifications disabled until after login and explanation
  • Warning if push notifications aren't set

I just found it cool that there was a spec called the illusionist.

If anyone knows what it did please share the info, if not, come up with your own ideas!

An illusionist could misrepresent what is at an outpost, or if he is on a sub, what is on that sub. Thats what I could gather from the info on the forums.

How do we even know he even existed? He was an illusionist after all. ;)

Found this little gem of information tucked back in Subterfuge's archives. The whole short conversation can be viewed here. I'm certain if you searched there would be more instances of one of the developers referencing the illusionist.

any time someone got an illusionist it became a bluffing game instead of a strategy / diplomacy game. nobody attacks an illusionist, and people rarely defended against him with anything but drillers. he just didn't fit well into the style of game that subterfuge is.

Personally, I believe the specialist class never existed and they just said they got rid of this "mythical specialist" to mess with people. The illusionist greatest trick was never existing in the first place.
