Tutorial Video's- A Community Driven Guide for Noobs

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • -Prologue-
In terms of game design, I think its important that a game respects its players- The Demon Souls series and its successors are a fantastic example of this- The game is practically known for its no nonsense- no hand holding style. You feel like a newborn thrown into a chaotic and cruel world- but you gain one of the greatest sense of euphoria a game can give by conquering it.

Demon and Dark Souls' players thrive off of it. And I think the lack of tutorial really sets the stage and prepare the player for what kind of experience.
Subterfuge respects its player base by giving its tutorial in form of a puzzle- which is a fantastic way to approach the game, as a problem or puzzle that needs solved- but it doesn't really prepare the player entirely for what lays ahead of them:

    -Specialist Interactions-
While the tutorial does show a couple key specialist interactions ad tricks it doesn't enough. Even to this day I am still finding little interactions that I'd never heard of even after all this time. While we should leave it to the player to concoct their own diplomatic style, I think we should give the new player a larger knowledge base when it comes to interactions.

I've had a couple noobies give up on this game because the puzzles made them impatient, and seemed unnecessary or unhelpful when the actual game started. Again I believe the tutorial style was primarily presented in its format to present the game in the form of a problem that needed solving. While this is brilliant it should have focused a bit more on wild cards in each game- the specialists.

    Basically...
I'd like to propose an idea- a community project, to provide new players with this information in a quick tutorial like manner to help reduce some frustration that comes with the brilliant yet inadequate tutorial.
I'm proposing short, community made video's disecting some of the deeper mechanics of the game not present in the current tutorial.

I have a moderate plan formed in my head on how to approach it, but i'm curious as to your own opinions or Idea's. Again, my focus is to make the experience of a newcomer more enjoyable by giving vital information in a fast and digestible format.

The kind of people I need are specialist knowledgeable
People with a smooth and sexy voice for the short audio
    Script writers
and over all some discussion on how to overall go about this.

  • I'm up for this. Idk if I have a sexy voice but I am able to speak which is a skill I'm pretty impressed with. I'd be happy to help if you would like me to.

    I need no other argument,
    I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.

  • This is a great idea. Not sure how I could help, or even if I could do anything to help. Instead, I'll play Devils Advocate (not that I don't want this done. It's a good idea. But someone needs to do this)

    1) how are you going to do the info? Cause subterfuge is such a huge game, every experience is different. If you try to include everything, the video will be way too long and nobody will want to watch it
    2) what to leave out? Like before, there's a lot to cover. Can you actually figure out what needs to be in and what will be cut?
    3) how will this video be shared? Seems like the only way would be to get the devs to work it into the system. If not, you're forced to just tell people to look at it in public chat every single time a noob joins your game. That'll get real annoying, real quick
    4) can you actually make it interesting? Or would many people start to watch it, think it's a waste of time, and move on? Cause they're already starting to do that with the puzzles. What's to say they wouldn't do that with a video?

  • Alconicy, Nivero-

Thanks for the support! Mind you the vids, might go a lot smoother with a script of what should be mentioned- Such as a list of the specialist synergies for the Navigator.

Thank you for taking up the mantle, well horns, as I've said before this idea is half formed, but I think I can answer most of your qustions.

    1. [How will we decide what information is relevant to a new player without losing their attention]:
I'm more or less thinking of containing the video's to approximately 5 minutes to each concept, or shorter depending on what the video is trying to convey- an Explanation on the infiltrator will take 45 seconds while a list of the uses of a Navigator or Pirate combo's could be longer.
I personally would like to write a structured narrative that keeps it packed with information. script will be posted on the forums for critique- either add basic stuff or strip away some of the more complex stuff.

    2. [How do we decide what to leave out, and whats important?];
Personally I'd like to spark a debate or have opinion poles about this matter- I'll be using the time constraint as the primary tool of what is too long- with the script visible this should be a more tangible problem. at the moment I feel like I'm grasping at air to answer. However I do need help deciding what topics to cover- as there already video tutorials over basics- combat phases, how to win, the time machine and what to do in the begining... I suggest we focus on Specialists.

    3. [Where can we put this?]
I rarely look back at the main page, but there is a link in the "How to play" option that leads to video's, Perhaps we can have them posted there, or alternatively we have them placed in the "News". This is optimal, but if its too much work for the Dev's the A Sticky on our Questions.

4 [Can we make it interesting?]
I'm considering that this forum is made of interesting people. I personally find the recorded forums games moderately enjoyable to watch and they are often just free libbed. I tend to find that people generally hold their interest based on the amount of quality or passion is put into it. Maybe I'm asking too much? but like I said we got some pretty interesting people around here.
