CUSTOM SERVERS?!?

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I, like most, I believe, have a love-hate relationship with this game. It's an awesome game, but losing hurts so much!
I consider it a simple game, but seeing all the simple factors interract creates a progressively complex gameplay that takes on a life on its own.
I thought the 'modding' would be merely an expansion of the game customization feature which I found to be a huge leap forward.
Right now it lets you choose an anonymous or open game, rated unrated, rating limit, factory heavy, random, generator heavy, balanced.
So, expanding this could include: Barring certain communication, barring certain or all specialists (some feel kings are OP), locked teams, choosing colors, perhaps renaming and even placing outposts. Choosing server sizes (Want to duel your friend in a huge map?), asymmetrical gameplay, custom starting or victory conditions. A game until elimination, not just territory control. A stalemate/draw by consent.
Deeper could be even changing some hardwired stats, like how many drillers are produced, how long cycles take. How many hires, how fast are the subs?

I know that arguably a game where there are no specialists, or private communication, would effectively hardly be Subterfuge... But that doesn't mean there couldn't be strategy, diplomacy.
There's strategy and diplomacy in agar.io.
These kinds of servers would have to be either classified or completely separated from the mainstream ones, because the confusion would be huge if they were all in one.
But it would put tons of power into the hands of the players. Would the know what to do with it? Some would. Maybe trends would develop, maybe the playerbase could show you something you didn't know yet.
Maybe a subterfuge game could be over in an hour, or 30 minutes.
Will you waste time in diplomacy, or just try to murder everyone while they plot against you?

  • That would be really fun.

These are some great ideas. I particularly like the idea of customized maps. Also, I know that plenty of players have asked for the ability to reskin their colors, their outposts, subs, specs, etc., and I think it would be a nice change (especially if they charge a few bucks for players to do it!).

We haven't seen TW around for a while, or at least I haven't noticed a post from him, but he would be very happy to see someone bringing this up again. I agree totally; while it would be a vastly different game than the current Subterfuge - it would be fun to sometimes be able to sit and play for an hour and then be done.

Before anyone comes in and says to not hold our breath for future changes, I'll say that I'm going to continue to hold out hope that the Devs will find some time and/or energy and/or desire to start implementing new features, like the ones you mentioned perhaps, or like the paid tournaments we have talked about before. Fingers crossed.

Yeah. I'm not a programmer, but this shouldn't be very hard to implement. All the stats are already there, you just have to create UIs, menus, and let players change the stuff that is already constantly changed by the specialists.
I'm not a huge fan of the monetization, but I'd go along with maybe spending 10$ on a L3 or something if it came with this. It would basically be a modpack of infinite conversions.
As for outpost reskins, that would require some actual art, and truthfully, that's not too important to me or relevant to what I wrote. The changes I proposed mainly concern actual gameplay, which is what the game is all about.
Yes, colors and names technically don't matter. BUT they could for example fill out the entire 3 letter code for outpost names. I find them a bit repetitive and I've played less than 20 games. Sure it'd be hard to make a name starting with "XGT or "ZPQ" but maybe just leave those blank or just make some cool 3 letter codes, or even mix numbers in.
I'm awed by the idea of playing a custom map with 'super outposts', consisting of multiple factories and generators, where a journey between two can take over 24 hrs, but within the 'super outpost' only 2-5 hrs. With the only hire being the martyr.
Monetization and source openness concern the ideology of the devs. Monetization is sometimes necessary, but something like this mod is completely at the discretion of the devs. I hardly see a reason not to do it, except that it might severely reduce the dependency on the devs.
Got an idea about slightly or profoundly changing an aspect of the game? You can probably create a server that almost or completely embodies it, without the devs.

  • I'm gonna go ahead and bump this, because I'd really like to get a reply from the developers. I don't even know what it's going to do, if anything.
I'm new to all this forum stuff, so Idk if it's bad ethiquette to bump such an old post. It's just an idea I'm pretty passionate about because subterfuge is the most hardcore game I've ever played on a phone.

  • Not at all - thank you for bumping this.
I would really like to see a speeded up version that could be played in a few hours.
I think a lot of us would happily pay $10-20 for L3.

  • Hmmm thanks for bumping this up, btw XD
Yes I'm a very big advocate of quick gameplay but I see this conversation is like a year old so I won't elaborate haha

Actually changing all this stuff does actually require a lot of work. Much more than you'd think. Of course, it depends how well the code is written to be able to handle changes like this, but I think some of the variables are just really hard to control and implement well. Changing one from a fixed to a changing one would need a lot of work to implement, and the new bugs that could arise would be tedious to fix...
