So, I'm making a Board Game for my Senior Project...

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • I'm designing and making a board game for my senior project, and I'm hoping to make a Subterfuge adaption.
As it is a tabletop game, obviously it couldn't be an exact copy, rather, I'd like to capture the Subterfuge style of play. And there's an additional twist, it's going to be entirely 3D Printed, so then anybody download the files and play.

So the mechanics would be similar: a series of outposts set up on a table, and each player starts out with some. (Chances are I'll switch the setting to Space, for variety and to avoid it being too much of a copy.) Two types of outposts, production and resource. To prevent needing hundreds of tiny pieces, production works a bit differently. The number of Resource Outposts owned gives a player an amount of resource to spend, and that player uses those to produce units at production outposts. The units would come in a few different classes, more powerful ones being more expensive, that way a 'sub' turns into a few ships with an aggregate power level. The game progresses in rounds, and the player's resource capacity is calculated at the beginning of each round, and spent over the course of that round. (I'm using fairly generic terms right now, I hope it's making sense.) So of course units are moved around to do combat with other players, and so on. It's just a rough outline at this point.

So does it sound interesting? Would it would play well? It's all a bit messy in my head, so any ideas or criticisms would be very helpful. The biggest problem I'm thinking about now is how to stagger movement between outposts without a game board, and yet keeping it fairly simple.
I'm highly suspicious of your motivations.

  • Trying to adapt subterfuge into a board game would be very difficult. It seems like it would either just be a complete flip, or end up very similar to Risk. However, I have no creative mindset at all, so if you think you can do it, then please do. I'd love to,see the final product :D but I won't be of any help

  • Honestly that sounds like of fun. Few clarifying questions to help me and you understand the game

-What is the end goal (how do you win?)
-6? Players. The Subtefuge 8 seems high for a board game
-Not sure if you wrote about this and I'm blind, but are there specialists? If so how does hiring work.

  • The winning mechanic would be to control a certain number of outposts, partly because it's simpler, and partly because it's more satisfying.
What's cool is that any number can play this game, because there is no board, all that's needed is to print more pieces. Of course, too many people would be confusing and take up a big area, so probably 3-5 would be recommended.
Yeah, specialists are a great addition, but first I want to work out how the game fully works before I add them.

Risk is exactly what I don't want to make, and I'm actually planning on playing (part of) a game to figure out why it doesn't work.

  • I think subterfuge was based off a board game or something may want to take a look at what inspired subterfuge?

I think it was kinda inspired by Neptunes Pride 2: Triton, but not entirely sure. I know the devs said something about that game once, it's an online game similar to Subterfuge

  • FYI: 3D printing is mad expensive unless you buy your 3D printer. Even then, it's still kinda expensive.

The good ones are $2000 I think. Or at least the maker bots at my school are. The plastic itself isn't that bad if you but it in Bulk yourself. TK is probably right if you pay somebody else to print it

  • I've never sent something out to a 3D printing company, so I don't know what the costs there are like, but my printer was about $200 total, and prints just fine. (Anet Prusa I3 kit, if anybody here is in the hobby.) A 1kg roll of filament is about $15, and lasted me about a month, including in the beginning when I was still learning and wasted a bunch.

The reason it's 3D printed is so other people can actually play the game, because it's not like I can start manufacturing game copies. But anybody with access to a 3D Printer could download some files and make it. Honestly, once I get all the rules and CAD files made and planned out, I'd be willing to print and mail a copy of the game to somebody if they would play-test it and give some feedback.
