Tournaments and monetization

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • This post is in regards to the current Elimination Tournament and also monetization when the game is released.

I saw in the latest update with the new structure of who is considered a winner in a single game (with the in game explanation also mentioned a free game pass to the victors).

I don't believe I am the only one that feels a sense of heightened excitement playing in the tournament where each round has a cut-off point of who could continue on. That cut-off point gives a purpose and meaning to forging an alliance or partnership with other players. It adds strategy of self sacrifice to improve the standing of your mates.

Before, with only one victor, if you self-sacrificed some drillers, an outpost, specialists, a relationship - there's an extra level of trust that the player you helped will help you back. With a tournament structure and allowing multiple players to move forward - if gives that player you helped a reason to ensure you make it to the next round. I feel there is a bit more give and take in these tournament agreements.

With that, I would love to see a new game mode - where there is a tournament lobby with a month long tournament. Depending on the number of players that purchase a seat in the tournament would determine the players per game and cut-off points.

With a monthly schedule, first week of a month would be when players can purchase their seats and tournaments fill up. Next three weeks are three games. To ensure games end within the allotted time, there could be a tournament style neptunium goal where maybe the goal begins at 200n, then every 24 hours the goal drops by 10n or so.

If you're knocked out of a tournament, you can still play regular weekly games. I think with this, weekly game seats may need to be free to play and earning the winners credits towards a tournament seat (this get's people excited for tournaments). Four wins earns you a tournament seat - allows for a casual play and practice for people just introduced to the game.

Then, perhaps you have paid regular weekly games where a first place gets you a tournament seat, and 2nd and 3rd earn a half-credit.

Just wanted to get some thoughts down while I had them in my head.

  • Thanks for your thoughts on this. We definitely like the feel of the tournament and we'd love to add them to the game. This is most likely something we'll do post launch. I like a lot of your ideas and also something along the lines of the Arena in Hearthstone.
