Does promoting a specialist get ride of the current specialists I could hire so I would get a new 3 to select from if I promoted.

Also when you promote do they keep the ability they had??

It does, but you can see what your next round of 3 will be at the bottom of the specialist window.

No, you lose the abilities of specialists you promote. Although some senior specialists have enhanced abilities of their junior counterparts, such as the Lieutenant/General.
