Overnight pause suggestion

Hi,

I love what you guys have done with this game. I really liked Neptune's Pride and you have definitely improved on that concept, especially with the time slider and queuing orders.

My biggest issue with the game as is though is that it runs overnight. I found myself setting an alarm for 4am this morning so that I could react to where a player had sent his queen... ( He had 3 decent places to run to, but my sub travelled faster).

I would love something in the game set-up that defined an overnight pause period. Say between 0 and 12 hours, and when that period start, e.g. 11pm GMT. This would relieve some pressure to check my phone in the small hours :)

I'm sure you guys can think of a good back story to justify this pause. Maybe a nightly magnetic storm.

There is an option like this being considered. Could also be used for weekends. (The game that is being covered on the development weblog is paused during the weekends.)

For now, maybe try to create/join a game where the title mentions your area specifically. It'll likely have more people that will want to sleep at the same time as you do.

My opponent was in a similar time zone, he just queued an order before he went to bed :)

I am glad you are considering something like this. One of the guys who played Neptune's Pride with us didn't want to join this time as he was concerned about this.

Weekends off could also be useful!

I personally like that the game is always going. When I wake up in the morning, progress has been made. I can see situations like this happening but checking at 4am is your choice if you really want to keep one step of the enemy. I like the fact that I make a move and notice that hours later, my enemy hasn't logged in to react yet.

I understand the concern but unless we are going to only play within our own timezones i think its a bad idea. The game is already a tad slow-moving (not a necessarily bad thing) and including a pause overnight would almost double the game length. Its also unfair to people in different timezones or with alternative schedules. Ifbwe only played within our own timezones it would also shrink the player pool. Rankings, etc. would have to be reconsidered.

I think the fact players play in different time zones adds to the fun of the game, war is 24/7 but I guess an option to add game open times would add an interesting different kind of game would be looooong games though!

I like the idea of pausing but I don't think it's a requirement.

The game moves at just the right speed where you can still react to any enemy actions while you were sleeping.

Plus, what else am I going to use my notes for if I don't need to write down when people sleep. ;)

This is my main use for notes, lol.

It's rare that going to sleep will cause you many problems that you can't solve in the morning. The games glacial speed helps with that. At first it will seem like you need to be checking in every hour or so in case you miss something but after a few games you realise that you can get away with a morning, afternoon and evening check and still be very competitive.

I really don't like the pause idea, I sleep 8 hours a day and I'm perfectly able to play. Plus it gives us another ability to figure out peoples ttimezones and sleep habits.

I think a pause would work, but you'd need to double the in-game speed to compensate.

The main benefit of long game times is that you can go to sleep, check back in the morning and expect nothing too terrible to have happened. If the game paused overnight and it still took ~12 hours to travel between outposts, that basically reduces you to one move a day, which I think would be offputtingly slow to a lot of players.
