starting a random-match tournament

Strategy, feedback, or anything SUBTERFUGE-related

  • hi all,

i'm interested in trying to start a tournament with a focus on creating fair competitive games. i think there should be a system for joining rated games with randomly matched opponents to really test players' skill. i believe one of the developers has said that they intend to add some sort of matchmaking, or competitive mode somewhere down the line, but until then it'd be fun to try making our own.

so i thought i'd make a post here to gauge interest, and if enough of you seem interested i'll try to put it together.

since randomly matching players is sort of the motivation for this whole thing, i'd want to have a fair amount of players committed before starting it. if there aren't enough players to create at least a few base games then the randomness of the matching loses meaning because you would be likely to end up with any friends you join with anyway

as for the details this is what i'm thinking (but i'm certainly open to suggestions if any of you think you have better ideas for a tournament layout, the main thing i am trying to accomplish is to get at least three rounds, and enough 1st round games that randomly matching opponents is meaningful):

    -single elimination
    -all matches would be rated
-matches of between 6 or 9 players
-i'd like for the top 1/3 of players from each match to advance.
-i'd like to get enough matches for three rounds if possible

to get three rounds we'd need 9 games in the first round, 3 in the 2nd round and one final. this would mean we would need a minimum of 54 players to do three rounds of 6 player matches or 81 players to do 9 player matches. which seems like a lot, but with how fast the game has grown since launch i think it might be doable if we really got the word out. and it would create some pretty exciting semi/final rounds. but if we cant get enough to do either of those, i'd consider doing two rounds or having more players advance to make it work.

if you'd be interested in joining or have suggestions for a better layout please let me know

  • I would be interested in such an event. : )

I think it is an good idear and also like that it is "only" 3 rounds. If partakeing in every round it would mean 3-6? weeks of Action.

I loved the KING of the hill games and cant wait to take part in whatever comes next.

So you can write me on your list.

I think you can get the player count but I also think it will be hard to get them all in the games since I expect lots of early resigners in the first rounds. Not sure how to compensate for such a thing.

  • I'd definitely be down for this kind of tournament-style, especially if some of the players agreed to kind of "cast" the games, at least the final game so those that lost can still follow the action and see the winner.

Also, can someone explain how King of the Hill works and how you know if a game is specifically KotH?

Well since the games will be rated, everyone who joins will have to have L2. I think this will dramatically reduce resigners.

And i was thinking about trying to sapce the rounds out either by 15 days or a month so that players have time to play other games in between, maybe we could time it so that the finals happen around the new year and the victor is crowned the subterfuge 2015 champ?

Yeah, i'd love it if we could get some players to cast their games, especially in the later matches. Or at least one experienced player could do an overview at the end once the fog is lifted.

This won't be a KotH tournament. But king of the hill was a sort of on going tournament that was running in beta. There were qualifiers every month and the top 3 were put into a finals match to face the victors from the previous finals. There is a thread around detailing the KotH tournament and its results if you look

  • I'm also in...I think 10 player games are more fun though than 6...The problem with king of the hill was that the elite games were a little bit boring after a while..That's my opinion of course :P

  • Count me in! I think it'd be cool to cast the final game. Going through players' vids from the broadcast game has been such a neat experience. Plus there would be a fairly large audience for it because:

    1. Players who lose will want to stay tuned to see how things play out.

    2. As it is the championship, the level of play will be so high that it can't not be entertaining! (Unless we get a bunch of Key Limes in the final...)
