The only (and it is big) thing I've read is:
"the next update will include a significant change. we're going back to only a single winner per game. we originally added multiple winners after having played in a tournament and loving the dynamics that emerged when 3 people progress to the next round.

we've since noticed that regular games with multiple winners don't seem to be as exciting as games with a single winner."

...so I'm wondering when this update will be and if any other changes are coming with it.

That announcement was from back in July, there were a number of updates to the beta after that. I might be wrong, but I think the current winner model with the medals is the one that stuck.

Just for some more information; in the time that I have been involved with the game I have seen 4 different win models:

1) 1 winner in every game.
2) 3/2/1 winners in 10-9/8-7/6-2 player games. These were considered equal winners.
3) Back to the 1 winner per game model.
4) Medal system introduced to reward higher placed finishes in bigger game when you weren't able to win.

Following the announcement you mentioned it reverted to option 3 above and by this stage we had profiles and could see our win records and they looked pretty dull with only 1st position finishes counting.
