Should you really promote that specialist?

This is only an idea of how to view promotions.

Let’s say you have a Navigator. Your next hire is an Intelligence Officer, an Infiltrator and a Saboteur. You have no particular need for any of the next hires. Should you promote the Navigator?
What are your options?

- Hire one of the 3.
- Promote the Navigator.
- Wait and see what happens.

The thing with promotions is that you not only gain a nice new skill in your deck of specialists but it will cost you two skills in return.
First the one you promote will be lost, second the hire available is gone.

So why should you promote your navigator? He is a nice combo peace and also useful on his own.

To me promotions are more sacrifice in tough situations then profit. Do I need any of the other specialists right now? No! I might need them in the future though... So I only promote if the effect will give me a big advantage in the current situation.

Exceptions are the Lieutenant and the Tinkerer. They will cost you only one specialist since he keeps his old skill and gives you new ones.

My point is: Think twice before promoting, it might not be as good as you think.

In my situation I still ended up promoting the navigator since I felt that it would help me much more now than any of the specialists could help me in the future. I hope I made the right choice. ; )

(It was a small map and I saw everything already, I was in no danger and I never hire infiltrator…so that’s to consider as well^^)

I also really like the security expert. Higher maximum shield levels for all outposts is very nice.

But yeah, I tend to keep my smuggler and navigator without promoting them. A smuggler *and* a tycoon would be nice though!

It depends on the specialist, but I do contemplate if I did something wrong when I have 4 specialist and someone else has 8 (saboteurs, etc)...

I don't usually like to promote my navigators or inspectors as i tend to prefer their abilities. I think it entirely depends on what the situation calls for, but most of the tier 2 specialists' gobal abilities generally make them worth it.

i do however think its usually smart to wait to play that card until you see a tangible opportunity, for example: surprising an enemy by upgrading a general/king last minute or getting the admirals speed bonus to catch an enemy's specialist or sneak yours in quicker. I also make sure to try to promote when i get specialist draws i don't want.

I was just about to say that, haha.
Even if I want a Tycoon, King, etc. I normally wait to promote them until I run into a bad specialist draw. There's normally one or two a game.

I always liked the security chief too! I viewed it like this: +10 shields per outpost make 100 shields if you have 10 outposts…that translated into drillers means you would get 100 drillers to defend your outposts. (Though of course they are stationary and scattered…but then again they also regenerate ^^) That’s not bad. But it still costs you 2 skills one of which is the Inspector who can be really good if used correctly)

There can be much more than one or two a game x D but yea it would be even worse if you were to sacrifice a specialist you need for a promotion. Though sometimes you have no other choice...

If I get Navigator first draw I *ALWAYS* promote to Admiral.

People underestimate that 1.5x speed global a lot.

I just got the perfect lineup this game: 1 Admiral, 1 King, 1 Tycoon.

Is a blessing.

But yes, I usually do wait to promote until I see the next draw. Unless I need Admiral to rush to a factory.
