So I sent an attack, with 40 drillers in front and the martyr in a separate sub behind them. The enemy sent 20 drillers into the 40 and they die, but then after the 0 drillers keep going and kill the martyr.

There can only be a sub of 0 if it carries a specialist along (own or captive). Thus, it is still an enemy sub and goes into combat. That's why it triggers the martyr. It's not a bug, it's how that is supposed to work.

How many ticks behind is the martyr? If it is only a single tick combat from the 40 sub in front would make them on top of each other..... Yet that doesn't explain the supposed "ghost sub"

I think the situation is as follows. The enemy sent 20 with a specialist on board. When the 40 hit, the sub lost, all drillers died and the specialist onboard was captured, headed for the closest base of the capturer. If it is the same with the outpost, from which the martyr originated, then they are on the same line, and they collide, and the martyr is triggered.

Oh, I didn't realize the 20 sub had a specialist on board. Makes sense now.

The enemy sub did not have a specialist on board

Then I think the best explanation is the one Nojo gave earlier. That the sub comes up in the next tick, and explodes. Its a bit like how you can't send a sub out from an outpost if another sub is arriving in the same tick. But, for future, reference, be more careful with martyrs. They're very dangerous, and only a small mistake can be deadly.

That's still seems bugged, they are in 2 separate subs because I waited around 20 minutes in between

The picture you posted isn't very helpful. Perhaps you could upload a series of pictures, or a gif? I am sure we could exlpain what happened if we had all the available information.

Assuming this is a glitch, didn't we see it before? A martyr exploded without participating in combat. The combat was simply inside of the martyrs radius. That could've happened again, I still have no idea what caused it but it might have actually glitched.
